CATL Unveils Condensed Matter Battery with 500 Wh/kg Energy Density Target

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has unveiled its third-generation condensed matter battery platform targeting an energy density of 500 Wh/kg—nearly double the current lithium-ion benchmark. The technology employs a semi-solid electrolyte that combines the safety advantages of solid-state designs with the manufacturability of conventional liquid cells, addressing the primary barrier to next-generation battery commercialisation.

Manufacturing and Timeline

CATL has committed $4.2 billion to a dedicated condensed matter battery production line in Ningde, China, with initial automotive-grade cells expected by Q3 2026. The technology is designed for drop-in compatibility with existing cell-to-pack architectures, minimising the retooling required by automotive OEMs.

“500 Wh/kg is the threshold that transforms electric vehicles from a compromise to a clearly superior choice. Range anxiety becomes a historical curiosity.”—Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman, CATL
